Strategic Planning Internship
About
During the summer of 2017, I was hired as a Strategic Planning and Quality Improvement intern at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont (BCBSVT). Over the summer, I researched the healthcare app market and created a strategic assessment for BCBSVT. I worked across the project management, quality, and strategy departments. I entered the role with little knowledge of healthcare—that was intentional, as they wanted me to bring fresh perspectives from my expertise in digital media development and challenge existing conventions.
I gained valuable insights into health plan operations and developed corporate negotiation skills. Throughout my internship, I communicated with a wide range of professionals, including doctors, C-level executives, VPs, and directors, gathering their interests and plans. Some preferred high-level overviews, while others wanted detailed information.
Although the health insurance industry lies outside my primary career interests, I acquired important skills in facilitating communication and navigating a corporate environment.
What They Gained from Me:
Documented Research:
210+ slides power point detailing my research
Spreadsheets with info on all the apps I tested
Word documents outlining my evaluation methods
2 Example Toolkits:
Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Musculoskeletal Conditions
A Few Paragraphs in the 2018 Strategic Plan
Connections with possible partners for app development
Final Presentation To CEO Don George
While I gave many presentations during my time at BCBSVT, my favorite was the one I delivered on the last day of my internship to the leadership team. Unfortunately, I can’t share all the documentation I created, and there is no recording of the presentation, but I can share these slides:
